Roberto Cuoghi was born in 1973 in Modena, Italy, and lives and works in Milan. Cuoghi studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, graduating in 2001. His group exhibitions include Torino Triennial 2005, Berlin Biennial 2006. He received an honorary mention in the Venice Biennial 2009.

He bizarrely owes part of his popularity to a will to disappear. In a reverse dandyst act of self-editing, refinement and artificiality, Cuoghi has started to wear the clothes that his father gave him and began to gain weight to fit them, only to found himself transformed in a 60 years old looking man - receding hairline and greying beard included - when he was in his late twenties. The process of transformation, far from being harmless to the artist's health has been the base for a series of works which held allusion to Andy Warhol's identity-play with cartoonish, super-stylized appearances.

In the biennial the artist is exhibiting a new version of the song Shanghai Rose which he used in Venice, his project Šuillakku (2008), which is about Assyro-Babylonian history and mythology. After an extended period of research involving historians, archaeologists, ethno-musicologists, linguists and industrial designers, Cuoghi produced a sculpture and a sound installation; a sculpture installation about his shift of identity; the video work Foolish Things (2002).
