Koo Jeong-a was born in Seoul in 1967. Her subtle installations, which allude to the histories of Performance and Conceptual art while poetically highlighting seemingly unimportant everyday items and materials, often border on the invisible. For the exhibition Unfinished History at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (1998), the artist created a shelter in the corner of the gallery, where she hid during the installation of the exhibition. When the shelter was removed, the artist had filled the corner with papier-mâché. This trace of her presence was titled Humpty Dumpty. Oslo (1998) is a miniature landscape of crushed aspirin on a small wooden base in the corner of a dimly lit room, and South (2000) consists of an overheated room and a mound of red earth assembled on a table.

Jeong-a has had solo exhibitions at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1994 and 1997), Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1998), and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (2004), among other venues. She has shown regularly in group exhibitions since 1994, including the Venice Biennale (1995, 2001, 2003 and 2009), Kwangju Biennale (1997), International Triennale of Contemporary Art in Yokohama (2001), and Biennale of Sydney (2004). In 2002, she was a finalist for the Guggenheim Museum's Hugo Boss Prize. She lives and works in Paris.

Work in Ladonia Biennial: Mothballousss

Roberto Cuoghi was born in 1973 in Modena, Italy, and lives and works in Milan. Cuoghi studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, graduating in 2001. His group exhibitions include Torino Triennial 2005, Berlin Biennial 2006. He received an honorary mention in the Venice Biennial 2009.

He bizarrely owes part of his popularity to a will to disappear. In a reverse dandyst act of self-editing, refinement and artificiality, Cuoghi has started to wear the clothes that his father gave him and began to gain weight to fit them, only to found himself transformed in a 60 years old looking man - receding hairline and greying beard included - when he was in his late twenties. The process of transformation, far from being harmless to the artist's health has been the base for a series of works which held allusion to Andy Warhol's identity-play with cartoonish, super-stylized appearances.

In the biennial the artist is exhibiting a new version of the song Shanghai Rose which he used in Venice, his project Šuillakku (2008), which is about Assyro-Babylonian history and mythology. After an extended period of research involving historians, archaeologists, ethno-musicologists, linguists and industrial designers, Cuoghi produced a sculpture and a sound installation; a sculpture installation about his shift of identity; the video work Foolish Things (2002).

William Forsythe (born 1949 in New York City) is an American dancer and choreographer resident in Frankfurt am Main. He is known internationally for his work with the Ballett Frankfurt (1984-2004) and The Forsythe Company (2005 - present). His early dance works are acknowledged for reorienting the practice of ballet from its identification with classical repertoire to a dynamic 21st-century art form, while his more recent works have further extended his research on the performative potentials of dance and his investigation of choreography as a fundamental principle of organization.

In 1994, Forsythe authored a pioneering and award-winning computer application Improvisation Technologies: A Tool for the Analytical Dance Eye which is used by professional companies, dance conservatories, universities, postgraduate architecture programs and secondary schools. 2009 marks the launch of Synchronous Objects for One Flat Thing, reproduced, an interactive web project developed in collaboration with The Ohio State University which offers extensive interdisciplinary insight into the complex structures of choreographic thinking.

In the biennial the artist has three works:

1. One Flat Thing Reproduced (2000)

2. The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude (1996) (Music by Franz Schubert, Symphony no. 9)

3. Bag Ladies (especially made for the biennial) – with the artist’s voice singing instructions to the dancers.

SIMON STARLING (ranking on artfacts: 191) was born in 1967 in Epsom England and is a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, he was the recipient of the coveted Turner Prize in 2005 and was shortlisted for the Hugo Boss Prize in 2004. He currently lives in Berlin and is Professor of Fine Arts at the Staedelschule, in Frankfurt Germany. He has exhibited widely including the Biennial de Sao Paulo and the Busan Biennal in 2004 and he represented Scotland at the Venice Biennial in 2003. He exhibited in the international exhibition at the Venice Biennial in 2009.

The installations of Simon Starling deal with natural and cultural processes of transformation. Each installation develops from a series of mental and practical steps that recall an experimental setup and at the same time describe a metamorphosis. The objects in space and the artist’s comments on their history constitute a unity. From the outset, the subject of Simon Starling’s work has been the labour expended to produce it. He displays the end result of carefully planned processes, and although the viewer only sees a reconstructed object, they are encouraged to consider the story behind its construction and transformation.

In Ladonia Biennial Simon Starling has made a new version of his project ("Swiss Connection”) from 2005: By night the Swiss buy... (The whole title will appear in the video).

Lygia Pape (1927 - 2004) was an influential Brazilian artist, active in both the Concrete and Neo-Concretist movements in Brazil. Like many Brazilian artists, she studied studio art informally, but she did receive a master's degree in the philosophy of art from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1980.

Along with Helio Oiticica and Lygia Clark, she sought to expand the territory of contemporary art to include aspects of interaction, though, like the Concretists, she remained opposed to any kind of representation in art. In 2009 she was rewarded with the honorary mention in Venice Biennial.

Haegue Yang was born in 1971 in Seoul, Korea. She currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany and Seoul, Korea. Acclaimed for her minimal yet exquisite installations, Haegue continuously explores the conceptual relationships of and between systems, structures, dependence and co-dependence.

Haegue Yang's art resists a defining medium, engaging instead with a range of means, from wall drawing to books, sculpture, installation, moving image, and photography. The oblique self-analysis that Yang uses as both strategy and substance in her "placeless" art is symptomatic of someone who has lived for many years outside of her native country and whose life and work entail the high-mobility and in-transit condition common to many contemporary artists operating internationally. This acute sense of provisional belonging--being at home in what is foreign and feeling foreign in what is home--lends Yang's work a hair-trigger sensitivity for the inflections of quotidian experience as well as public and private territories. She has described her practice in terms of a poetic activism. In 2009 she is participating in the International Venice Biennial exhibition as well as representing South Korea in the Korean pavilion.

Jumana Emil Abboud (b.1971) Palestinian.
Lives and work in Jerusalem. Uses different media, including drawing,
video, performance and text to depict both memory, loss and resilience.
The artist was born in Shefa-Amer (Palestine, 1971) before moving to
Canada in 1979 where she studied art at the Ontario College of Art
(Toronto). Back to her homeland, she studied at the Bezalel Academy of
Art and Design (Jerusalem), where she attained her BFA. She has given
several workshops and seminars, some of them focusing on Palestinian-
Israel dialogue.

”Working in the mediums of drawing, installation, video and performance, my creative motivations and interests relate to the dualities of our being, especially regarding one's relationship with personal and/or collective memory. Much of my creative language relates to an act of veiling and uncovering; I have an obsession - a delicate one I hope - with analysis of past juxtaposed with current cycles, and my creative expressions are metaphoric, whether collective or personal; reasoning with the paradox, the transparent, and traces of another.”

Rachel Harrison’s (born 1966, New York) sculptures populate a space of interpretation that at one moment encourages critical discourse and at another draws on its own enigmatic, intuitive logic. With a deluge of cultural debris including canned goods, celebrity magazines, fake fruit, wigs, mannequins, soft drinks, and taxidermied animals placed on forms of often monolithic scale, Harrison conflates the art historically scripted media of painting, installation, sculpture, and photography. She recombines abstraction with the figurative, the biomorphic with the architectural, and the readymade with the handmade. The sculptures are often painted in a variety of ways ranging from monochromes to multicolored palettes that veer from Rococo painting to amusement park decor. Such surface detail at once informs and undermines their simultaneously flamboyant and totemic presence.

She is represented in the Ladonia Biennial with a video collage of some of her major themes. You can here meet Fats Domino, HMS Beagle, people in Perth Amboy where the virgin has been seen, Marlon Brando acting and singing with Marilyn Monroe, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Fassbinder, Alexander the Great, Simon Le Bon, John Cage, David Foster Wallace (1962-2008) Consider the Lobster...
